"It Was Like Checking Out Of A Motel"
When the eminent Pound scholar Hugh Kenner left UC Santa Barbara after a couple of decades, a reporter at Johns Hopkins where he had accepted a position asked what it was like leaving his previous post after so long a time, and he made the memorable and very witty observation "It was like checking out of a motel." In some ways I feel the same today. I first came to Hull in 1975, and in all those years had some wonderful times, but in almost every instance the fun and laughter were generated by the guests I invited who came from elsewhere. The local ambience had little effect upon me. So goodbye; I can't imagine I will ever come back here again. At the moment I am waiting to leave for the commuter train which will take me to South Station where I will board Amtrak for New York City whence I shall fly to Sarasota two weeks hence. I am going off-line more or less during this period of time, and thus no more inanities until probably Monday, August 11th.
